Apple’s unveiling of the new Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max allowed users to automate personalized system actions such as toggling concentration modes, camera flash, shortcuts, and accessibility features.
Now, rumors are swirling that the iPhone 16 lineup will feature a new and mysterious Capture button specifically designed to trigger camera functions. Dubbed as “Project Nova” internally, this button, commonly referred to as the Capture button by the media, is rumored to be located on the right side of the phones and may incorporate capacitive feedback functionalities.
Recent discoveries have pleasantly surprised us with the revelation that the iPhone 16’s Capture button will initiate video recording starting from iOS 18. And now, according to the latest leaks, more intriguing details about this curious Capture button have surfaced.
iPhone 16’s Capture Button to Activate Different Functions Based on Pressure Sensitivity
The upcoming iPhone 16 generation promises excitement. The introduction of the new Capture button will finally fulfill the desires of many iPhone users who have longed for a dedicated button for capturing photos and videos, replacing the need to use the volume buttons. Interestingly, rumors also suggest that Apple is experimenting with prototypes of the iPhone 16 featuring a single unified volume button.
A user on the Chinese social network Weibo, known as “Instant Digital,” has corroborated the latest revelations by Mark Gurman regarding the video functions of the Capture button and added that it “will be capable of emulating the capabilities of a high-end digital camera.”
The primary function of the Capture button will indeed be to capture images and videos. However, it will feature a pressure sensor capable of detecting different levels of force. According to the information provided, a gentle press will activate the camera’s focus adjustment mode, while a firmer press will capture the photo or video.
This function has been present in most high-end DSLR cameras for many years, where the shutter button goes through two phases: a half-press activates focus or exposure adjustment, and a full press captures the photo.
The source of this information has a fairly reputable track record in past leaks, being the first to reveal that Apple planned to release a yellow iPhone 14 in the spring, among other details related to Spatial Audio and improvements in the Apple Watch Series 9. Therefore, this information is quite reliable.
However, as always, the accuracy of the information is not necessarily indicative of the final results. It’s worth noting that the iPhone 16 is still in its early development phase, and while there are prototypes of the device, Apple has not yet finalized its plans for the Capture button and may make changes accordingly.
