Xiaomi’s first electric car has become virtually secret-free, thanks to data released by a Chinese regulator. In the last few hours a few details, accompanied by images, of the Xiaomi SU7, which will debut on the Asian market in early 2024, became known.
While it is true that Xiaomi’s electric car had already been seen “camouflaged” on the Chinese streets, this is the first 100% official review of its most important features. The vehicle in question is a five-seater sedan that will be available in two engine configurations and in three models.
The Xiaomi SU7 will introduce a variant with rear-wheel drive and an engine capable of delivering a power output of 220 kW. While the remaining configuration will be with all-wheel drive and will feature two engines -one on each axle-, of 220 and 275 kW, respectively. This will allow a maximum power delivery of 495 kW.
In terms of top speeds, Xiaomi’s electric car promises to reach 210 kilometers per hour in its single-engine version, while the twin-engine version can reach 265 km/h. Another element to note is that, as rumored, the Xiaomi SU7 will be available with 19-inch and 20-inch wheels.
This is what the SU7, Xiaomi’s first electric car, looks like.
In terms of dimensions, the carriage of the Xiaomi SU7 will be interesting. The measurements disclosed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China indicate that it will be 4.99 meters long, by 1.96 meters wide and 1.45 meters high. The wheelbase will be 3.33 meters.
The weight will be 1,980 kilograms for the single-engine version, while the two-engine configuration will reach 2,205 kilograms. In both cases, the reference corresponds to the car unladen.
About the batteries of Xiaomi’s first electric car, details remain limited. The Chinese regulator only mentions that it will use lithium-ferro-phosphate (LFP) accumulators supplied by BYD in its cheapest version, while the more expensive model – or models – will include nickel-cobalt-manganese (NMC) batteries from CATL. However, their respective capacities are unknown.
Xiaomi has submitted to the authorities three versions of its electric car for homologation. These will be known as SU7, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max, although there are also references to a Founders Edition. In any case, no details are offered on what features will be available in each of them when configuring them for purchase.
For example, it stands to reason that the standard SU7 will be available only with rear-wheel drive. However, it is not known if the all-wheel drive version will be limited to the SU7 Max, or if it will also be available as an option on the Pro. As reported by CarNewsChina, at least one version – which we assume will be the top of the line – will include an active rear spoiler. That is, it will be automatically raised when the car travels at high speed to generate more aerodynamic load on the rear axle.
Software and sensors
For its first electric car, Xiaomi has decided to implement HyperOS, its new operating system. This software was presented a few weeks ago and will be used in virtually the entire product catalog of the Chinese brand, which covers more than 200 categories of devices.
The Xiaomi SU7 will stand out for the inclusion of a LiDAR sensor, although it will not be available in all versions. Likewise, the regulatory documents mention the implementation of a camera in the central support located between the front and rear doors. This suggests that the car will introduce a facial unlocking system.
On the other hand, Xiaomi will equip its electric car with a function known as ETC to pay for passing through a toll booth automatically, without the need to stop the car.
Manufacturing of the Xiaomi SU7 will be carried out at the BAIC automaker’s plants. While some prototypes of the vehicle have already been tested on Chinese streets, full-scale production will start in December, with a view to completing the first deliveries in February 2024.
